The ABC’s of Being Your Own Health Advocate

Have you ever had an appointment with your medical provider and left feeling like you didn’t quite get your issue resolved?

Consider the ABC’s of being your own health care advocate.

A stands for ASK: When in doubt, ask, “What does that mean?” It is your responsibility to ask for clarification. Remember, there are no bad questions when it comes to your health. You are helping your provider better understand you and your needs when you ask questions. Bring a supportive friend if this is difficult for you.

B stands for Be Prepared.  Make a list of your top three complaints, write them down and take it with you. Something that is scary should be priority. Rehearse your questions. Health care appointments tend to be brief, so be prepared.

C stands for Communicate Concerns and Desires. Tell your physician if you have concerns about health care costs, expectations or desired outcomes from your appointment. The physician may have resources to recommend for you. Be honest. The one thing you are afraid to say may be the key which helps resolve your health issue.

Do your best to advocate for yourself. If something doesn’t feel right, you may want to get a second opinion, especially if you have a serious condition. You are the expert on what is going on inside your body. Your physician has the medical knowledge. The best scenario is when you work together as a team.

Remember this quote: “I've never once regretted using my voice. But I've certainly regretted not using it.”- Unknown.
