A local author has a new cookbook out with a twist like no other!
Perre Coleman Magness’s latest is The Southern Sympathy Cookbook: Funeral Food with a Twist.
“Funeral food really is just comfort food. It’s something that everyone likes to make to help their friends and neighbors and their family. And comfort food is really a popular topic these days. We could all use a little bit more comfort and home cooking.”
When talking with her publisher about the concept, this Memphis native knew it had to have a Southern slant.
“When I was asked to write this book, I said I can do Southern. That’s something I know. I don’t know anything about Minnesota Lutherans or Brooklyn Italians but I do know that Southerners like to get that casserole dish out.”
She has compiled 75 fresh and fun recipes that include breakfast dishes, snacks, casseroles, and even Jello salads!
The most popular funeral food to everyone she asked - no matter age, race, or religion – was Fried Chicken. She’s got her classic tried and true buttermilk fried chicken in the book too.
“I think what we all want to take to someone in need - whether it’s a death or an illness or just a crazy time of life – is something that will be useful. That’s going to help them out, going to comfort them, and let them know that you love them.”
Perre will be signing copies of her book this week.
“I’ll be signing The Southern Sympathy Cookbook at Novel on Thursday, January 18th, at 6 o’clock.”
