A Laughing Matter

Not everything that is contagious is good for us, but laughter is!

When we laugh we actually are exercising. Think about it. We stretch muscles, increase our blood pressure and heart rate and sometimes even break out in a sweat. Who can resist a good belly laugh, especially the ones which get you snaughling, a mixture of snorting and laughing.

Laughter binds people together and releases chemicals in our body which make us feel better. Nothing works faster than laughter when it comes to lifting burdens, inspiring hope and helping us engage in life.
Laughter is scientifically proven to benefit us physically by:

  • Helping prevent heart disease
  • Reducing effects of pain and stress on the body
  • Enhancing  immune cells
  • Relaxing our body

There are also social and emotional benefits to laughter, including:

  • Reducing anxiety and fear
  • Improving mood and building resilience
  • Diffusing stressful conflicts
  • Building connection with others

Some of the best consultants on tapping into the gift of laughter are under the age of 10 and reside in your own home. So, the next time you are asked, “Knock, Knock”, join in for some of the best medicine for a healthier life.

This is Sheila Harrell with the Church Health Center.

Laughter is the best medicine.
