Upstream: Canada and Tennessee Have Close Economic Ties

As the Memphis in May International Festival salutes Canada this month, we hear from our northern neighbors about our shared economic interests. Listen to this interview with Consul General Louise Blais based in Atlanta, and then check out some statistics below.

Canada-Tennessee Economic Facts

  • EXPORTS: More than a quarter of Tennessee’s international exports are shipped to Canada. Our main exports are automobiles ($1.3 billion), computers ($1 billion) and motor vehicle parts ($780 million). The state exports a total of $8.6 billion in goods to Canada.
  • IMPORTS: Tennessee’s primary Canadian imports are aluminum products ($1.2 billion), medicine ($853 million) and motor vehicle parts ($350 million).
  • TOURISM: An estimated 488,000 Canadian tourists visit Tennessee annually, spending a total  of $101 million.
  • JOBS: An estimated 170,300 Tennessee jobs depend on trade and investment with Canada.
