Easy Yoga for Diabetes

Diabetes is a condition which affects how the body processes food for energy.

The body breaks down food into glucose, or blood sugar, which is then transported to cells of the body through the circulatory system. If there is not enough insulin to pick up the glucose and put it into the cells, the glucose remains in the circulatory system traveling around the body with no destination. The circulatory system was not designed to continue to circulate glucose in the body and over time, this can lead to damage of the eyes, the nerves and the kidneys. Exercise and reducing stress help improve the body’s ability to manage the effect of diabetes.

Yoga for diabetes is the perfect prescription for managing stress and participating in light to moderate exercise for the body. There are many types of yoga from low to high intensity. The benefits of yoga include improving circulation, reducing stress and building strength and flexibility. Consult with your health care team to determine the best type of exercise for you and if there are any yoga poses which should be avoided.

Keep in mind, a lower level yoga program may need to be coupled with some type of aerobic activity, like walking to boost cardiovascular health. This is Sheila Harrell with the Church Health Center.
